The Advertising Specialty Institute conducted research in 2013, including Sydney in in its research.  The takeout from the research is ” Promotional products deliver the same or better ROI than most other forms of media, without the interruption inherent with other forms of advertising. And when one considers the prohibitive cost of producing radio or television commercials or the cash outlay to buy sufficient Internet advertising, pomotional products offer the best value. Promotional products can also be used to more closely target the intended message recipient than mass media. Further, even smaller companies can achieve as high an ROI as major corporations by using advertising specialties because even a modest investment delivers superior results

The research also looked at how product popularity worked with recipients. In Sydney, pens and writing instruments were the most popular.  And it makes sense. People use pens, and if they don’t want them, they are more likely to give them away, thus passing on the advertising.  In Sydney, recipients of promotional products were less likely to throw them away. If the recipient didn’t need the product the research revealed that 18% of Sydney recipients throw the product away, 18% file it away, and a whopping 64% of recipients give the product away! Now that makes for more impressions for no additional investment.

39% of Sydney recipients keep the item at home, so if you are targeting an item, it may not end up in the recipient’s office – especially for items  hats, bags and shirts.

The usefulness and attractiveness of a promotional item bears a strong correlation to whether the item will be kept or not, so consider Sydney’s weather, demographic, and your target audience before choosing an item.  In Sydney, 80% of the people kept an item because it was useful, as against 70% in Rome.  In Sydney, 26% of the recipients kept the item because it was attractive, as against 35% in Rome.

The research revealed that people  in Sydney were more likely to adorn their desks with pen sets, logo’s phone chargers, business card holders, and the like.    76% of consumers who own calendars display them prominently in the office or home. 

And don’t overlook caps or hats – 59% of people keep them, and a whopping 34% of Sydneysiders wear at least one promotional cap or hat. Now this is a big number, compared with the USA, where branded hats wearers account for only 19%.

Branded outerwear such as jackets have the best advertiser recall of any promotional product. In fact, 95% of those who own logoed outerwear can recall the advertiser’s name. In Sydney, 86% of consumers think more positively about an advertiser after receiving a promotional jacket.

As far as creating the most impressions,  branded bags are the winner in Sydney, with promotional bags generating 5881 impressions.. Given that a person carrying a branded bag is seen by many others, this makes sense – the person carrying the bag in Sydney can be a “walking billboard”.
